VANITY PLATE INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS
Vanity plates are available for the following types of plates:
Up to 7 characters – plus one dash or space
Antique Auto, Combination, Commercial, Custom Vehicle, Hire, Motor Home, Passenger, Street Rod, Trailer, Wabanaki
Up to 7 characters – includes space or dash
Autocycle, Motorcycle, Moped, Antique Motorcycle, Special Veterans Motorcycle
Up to 6 characters – plus one dash or space
Agriculture, Agriculture Commercial, Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, Black Bear, Breast Cancer, Emergency Medical Services, Farm,
Lobster, Maine Lighthouse Trust, Sportsman, Support Animal Welfare, We Support Our Troops
Up to 6 characters – includes space or dash
Special Veterans
Up to 5 characters – plus one dash or space
Firefighter
Up to 5 characters – includes space or dash

Special Veterans Disability
Vanity plates with a total of 7 characters may mix numbers and letters in any order, as long as there is at least one letter in the sequence, i.e.
A123456, 1234A56, 123456B, AGR8PL8.
Vanity plates having fewer than 7 characters may mix numbers and letters as long as the first character is a letter, i.e. A1, A2B, A3C5,
A4D4U, F2G3H4.
Vanity plates must not begin with a 0 (zero) or with the letter “O”, followed by only numbers.
Please note: Vanity plates with seven characters, plus one space or dash will cover the chickadee design.
An ampersand (&) is available on vanity plates with 2 to 6 characters. The sequence must begin with a letter, i.e. A&71B, AB&C-2.
Vanity plates issued must not duplicate a vanity plate issued in any other class code.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
COMMERCIAL – Vanity plates may be issued to trucks for all weights, with the exception of truck-tractor configurations.
SEMI-TRAILERS/CAMPER TRAILERS – Vanity plates are allowed for all trailers, with the exception of long-term trailers. When
registering a trailer for two years, the fee for a vanity plate is $50 ($25 for each year).
First time requests for Wabanaki plates must be accompanied by the Certification of Membership form, MV-18.
First time requests for Firefighter plates must be accompanied by the Firefighter application (PS-43), signed by the Fire Chief, along with an
additional one-time $5 fee required for Firefighter plates.
First time requests for Emergency Medical Services plates must be accompanied by the Emergency Medical Services application (MVR-17),
along with an additional one-time $5 fee required for Emergency Medical Services plates.

First time requests for *Special Veterans, *Special Veterans Disability, Special Veterans Motorcycle plates; Purple Heart, Purple Heart
Motorcycle plates; and Disabled Veterans and Disabled Veterans Motorcycle plates may require proof of eligibility.
*If replacement veteran decals are needed for class code VT or DS, please include an additional $5 fee with your request.
Veterans, please visit the Bureau of Veterans’ Services website at http://www.maine.gov/dvem/bvs for information relating to state and
federal benefits you may have earned for your military service.
FEES
There is a $25 annual fee for vanity registration plates. Since vanity fees are due at time of application and at each re-registration, it may be
advantageous to wait and apply when renewing your registration.
If applying at the time of re-registration, please provide: $35 registration fee, $25 vanity fee, evidence of insurance and excise tax receipts
(white and yellow copies) from your town office.
Agriculture, Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, Black Bear, Breast Cancer, Conservation, Lobster, Maine Lighthouse Trust, Support Animal
Welfare, University of Maine, and We Support Our Troops plates cost an additional $20 for the first year and $15 annually at time of
renewal, plus the vanity fee of $25. Sportsman vanity plates are an additional $20 annually, plus a $25 vanity plate fee.
Please make checks or money orders payable to the Secretary of State. Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express are
accepted.
AN IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING VANITY PLATE REQUESTS
Vanity plates area a great way to personalize your motor vehicle. Please keep in mind as you request a phrase, acronym or abbreviation to use
on a Maine registration plate that other citizens may not understand your intended phrase, or may be offended by it, and make a complaint to
the Secretary of State.
Maine law, MRSA Title 29-A §453 paragraph 3-A Restrictions. The Secretary of State may refuse to issue or may recall a vanity registration
plate issued under this section that:
C. Falsely suggests an association with public institutions;
D. Is duplicative;
E. Consists of language which encourages violence, may result in an act of violence or other unlawful activity because of the content of the
language requested by the registrant;
F. Is profane or obscene;
G. Makes a derogatory reference to age, race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, ancestry or national origin, religion or
physical or mental disability;
H. Connotes genitalia or relates to sexual acts; or
I. Forms a slang term, abbreviation, phonetic spelling or mirror image of a word or term otherwise described in this subsection.
Should the Secretary of State receive a complaint about a vanity plate, the registrant may be required to surrender the use of that vanity plate.
